Wroughton Primary School
The Swindon Goldies had a wonderful time at Wroughton Primary School where we joined together in commemeration of World War One.
The Goldies from Park South, Park North & Wroughton arrived by coach at the school where they were warmly welcomed.
The school had most kindly prepared a buffet lunch for us, which was very impressive and all tasted lovely. The Goldies hadn’t been expecting such a grand spread of hot soup with rolls, assorted sandwiches, homemade cake & biscuits and of course, a cup of tea (or two!)
While we were eating we were able to look out at the children on their lunch break in the playground. They were all dressed up in old fashioned clothes. This brought back memories of childhood to the Goldies. “ I wish I had that much energy” said one “Yes, I can remember running round like that” said another “ Does them good to be outside with the wind in their hair”.
We were then invited to join the children in their afternoon performance in the assembly hall. The Goldies delighted in watching all the children come walking into the hall. The children performed poems and plays for us. Then it was time for us all to join in with the children and sing the WW1 Rememberance Medley. We had been practising this in our sessions, the Goldies were slightly nervous but ready & they all sang beautifully.
On our way back to the library we passed the schools memorial for all the local men from Wroughton who had gone off to the war. There was a pile of small stones gathered and each one had the name of a man written upon it. This was very touching and bought a lump to the throat.
We were offered another cup of tea before we left, but this turned out to mean a cream tea! with scones, biscuits and the tallest sponge cakes we had ever seen.
To say our Goldies enjoyed the afternoon is an understatement. Many thanks to Wroughton School who made us feel very welcome and we were treated like guests of honour. Spending time with the children was a real treat for our Goldies. Their memories of the day will last a long time.
