The children at St Joseph and St Teresa's Catholic Primary School in Wells were delighted to welcome The Street Goldies into school on Wednesday 12th November 2014.
We invited The Goldies and the Grandparents of the pupils to participate in our WW1 Commemoration Day. The children came into school dressed in costumes representing the theme of WW1. The teachers planned a wide range of activities, such as poetry writing, trench making, Poppy making and more. The Goldies stayed with us all day, rotating around the activities with the children, they had a hot school dinner and the day finished with a whole school war time sing-along.
One hundred years after WWI, there is no one left to tell us about it. None of the soldiers who fought in
the trenches are alive anymore. When we look at pictures and read texts from the war, we see a world very different from our own. It is important that we teach the children us about our history. It is important that we don’t forget what has happened in the past. as part of our day we prayed for people affected by war in our world today and we prayed for peace, in our hearts, in our community and in our world.
The Goldies and the grandparents, loved being part of our school for the day. The thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the children, and the children loved the Goldies coming to visit. This type of day helps to bring generations closer together.
A special thanks to Gina Cleverley for teaching the Goldies and the children a fantastic range of war time songs from 'Daisy, Daisy' to 'Keep the Home Fires Burning'. Which we all sang together at the end of the day. We all got the feel good factor from a great
sing-a-long!
