Holy Trinity CofE VA Primary School, Yeovil
Mrs. Claire Hillier-Nickels - Class Teacher at Holy Trinity Primary writes:
We started this term with an exciting event on Wednesday where we invited the Golden Oldies group or ‘Goldies’ as they are better known, to join us in a commemorative WW1 event. Also invited was the founder of the Charity Mr Grenville Jones, The Mayor and Mayoress, South Somerset District Councillor, Sylvia Seal and Mrs Burr the Arts Officer. The whole school were amazing and welcomed the visitors with a concert filled with singing, stories, music and poetry. Followed by each class hosting a ‘Goldie’ and getting to know each other before enjoying lunch in the School hall.
In the afternoon, along with a few special visitors including Mr and Mrs Forrest (dressed in 1940s outfits with loads of memorabilia), Year 5 & 6 brilliantly shared their WW1 knowledge and projects before we all joined together in a WW1 sing-a-long led by Grenville Jones where young and old enthusiastically sang a medley of songs including ‘Pack up your troubles’ and ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’. Some of the Year 5 & 6s then hosted a tea party to finish the day where we all shared cakes made by the children. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the day and comments from both the children, who enjoyed learning first hand from the older generation, and the Goldies, who were full of praise for the confidence, politeness and knowledge of the children they met, were very positive. We hope this will be a link we can now build on and encourage the ‘Goldies’ to join us again.
